The 34-year-old female entrepreneur Rany Moran is one of fashion's most celebrated personalities in town. We talk to her and get the latest fashionable updates from this stylish star.

What’s new with you, Rany?

I am currently still busy working for my family—in the television and property businesses. I am also busy expanding Amazonia into 10 countries in Asia Pacific, and developing a good strong commercial property portfolio in Indonesia, also soon expanding more into food and beverages chains in Singapore.

How has working in a family business enriched your life?

It has taught me a great deal. Through such involvement, I have developed a lot of skills and learned to never give up. It has also strengthened my bond with my parents and has taught me how to balance work and family.

How involved are you in the hotel business or other businesses that your family owns?

I now serve as Marketing Director and Business Development Advisory.

What does success mean to you?

Success means being at a level in which one is able to raise wonderful and successful children and to fulfil your own or your family’s dreams. It’s when one can contribute positively to the lives of others. The key for me is how deep I can impact other people in a positive way.

What are the important lessons that you believe are vital to your success?

Having the courage to set goals and not to give up easily, developing effective strategies, getting the best people in your team, thinking outside the box, and managing details.

Who do you look up to in life? Do you have any role models?

Richard Branson. He has established a business juggernaut from scratch. He gives opportunities to people, motivates, and is highly involved in his businesses.

Good pairs of Loboutins and Chanel jackets for travelling.

Jewellery and clothes, of course.

What do you think of Cartier jewellery?

Classic, timeless, and luxurious. My favourites are their evening watches and earrings from their Orchid and Panther’s collection.

How do you give back to society?

I support a lot of charity activities that focus on improving children’s health and education. Recently, my friends in Singapore and I set up a non-profit organisation called LOAF to help poor and needy children in Indonesia through education and health programmes.

Please share with us your life philosophy.

Influence other people’s lives positively through kind acts, as one of my favourite quote puts it, “What we do for ourselves dies with us, but what we do for others remains and is immortal.”

Please share with us a bit about your family.

I am a mother of two wonderful boys: Nicholas, 7, and Christopher, 4. I’m married to Colin who has been living in Asia for 20 years. We are quite private.

What is your favourite indulgence?

Shopping and a great chocolate cake.

What advice can you impart to those fashionistas out there?

Indulge in fashion, have fun with it, but don’t follow the trend blindly.

What motivates you to start your own business?

It gives me room to grow while doing what I love doing.

How do your transform your dreams into reality?

I set my goals every year, and I focus on them. Each year, I step closer to achieving my dream.

What is your business philosophy?

Be honest and don’t cheat others. Apply a good communication system with the staff, engage throughout the organisation, and pay attention to detail.

Amid your busy schedule, how do you spend time with your family?

Our weekend is valuable. We usually go out for sports, like swimming, playing tennis, cycling, or treating ourselves to a good dinner. And we try to focus on two to three fantastic holidays with the kids each year.

What is family to you?

It is the essence of life: without family, everything becomes insignificant.

What is your most favourite destination for travelling?

The Maldives and Niseko (these two are my choices of nature escape), and Italy (rich in culture, food, and history).

How do you maintain your fresh look with your busy schedule?

Exercise, healthy eating, good fashion style and good skin care, especially sun block and moisturiser.
